Lack of inclusive employment remains a barrier: NDIA

Lack of inclusive employment remains a barrier: NDIA

Lack of inclusive employment options remains the greatest barrier for NDIS participants finding and keeping a job, while disability or poor health was listed as the main reason for unemployment.

A recent study released by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) provides important insight into employment enablers and barriers for people with disability.

People with a disability reported that flexible work environments and work culture were important for keeping and enjoying work.

The Employment Outcomes analysis aims to identify the positives and challenges for people with all types of disability to find and retain work. The NDIA has also released findings from a research analysis as part of a broader employment research project.

Five Good Friends CEO Simon Lockyer said ensuring that NDIS participants were able to participate and contribute was critical to ensuring an end to discrimination and an inclusive society.

“We understand from our Members that for some NDIS participants they may need extra support from Helpers to focus on achieving goals and maintaining connection."

“For others, it is about taking control and confidently charting their own course. Our role is simply to provide the right tools and support so they can successfully achieve their goals.”

“The report states that the right support was essential for NDIS participants to find and retain a job including Transition-To-Work support, such as travel training and developing workplace skills. “

“As the WeThe15 Campaign argues now is the time to unite to change attitudes and create more opportunities for persons with disabilities, as well as improve mobility and accessibility.”

NDIA Chief Executive Officer Martin Hoffman said the analysis would provide further insights into what could be done to support participants looking for work and were part of the agency’s ongoing commitment to increasing opportunities.

“Meaningful employment is the goal of many NDIS participants, and we encourage all businesses to adopt inclusive employment practices,” he said.

“The benefits of being employed are far reaching and include expanding social networks, increasing community connections and improving a person’s health and wellbeing,” Mr Hoffman said.
